Customer Response
Brewer is fine but pitcher is a poor design.
I bought this after my experience with a Mr Coffee unit my dad had given me. The prior unit had a round pitcher whereas this model has a square pitcher. Pouring from the square pitcher is just lousy. It tends to spill if you don't pour really slowly. I brew a pitcher at a time and transfer to a standard 1 gallon milk or water bottle. I use a funnel but the square pitcher is just a bad design. I have gone back to the round pitcher from the previous unit and everything is just right. Luckily, the two pitchers were identical in height and the new tea maker brews into the old pitcher without a hitch. I have never had any of the problems talked about here in the reviews with spill over or incomplete brewing. I still love the Mr Coffee brewer, just wish they had not changed the pitchers. If you do buy one rest assured that they are a great brewer. Just look for the model with the round pitcher. And PS> always use a standard coffee filter if you use loose tea. I use Lipton loose tea and the filter all the time with no problems. Always wait until the brew cycle has ended, (add a couple minutes for the filter to drain), and remove the brew basket before you remove the pitcher...simple as that.
It would be difficult to design a worse tea maker
I'm giving this a one star rating only because there is no zero star option. I can't remember ever coming across a more poorly designed product. Did the manufacturer even attempt to make tea with this model? I've used this five times and had hot tea leak all over my counter every time. No matter how I place the supplied pitcher against the tea maker about one quarter of the tea ends up leaking out. The spout on the machine doesn't stick out far enough to clear the lip of the pitcher. A small steady stream of tea pours down the side of the machine every time. This is the last time I buy a Mr. Coffee product (after using their products for the past 25 years).
Leaking Tea Maker remedy
As is the case with many others, no matter how careful we were, we have had tea run all over the counter and onto the floor. We obtained a second tea maker of the same model (free replacement) that did the same thing. The leak always seemed to occur at the end of the brewing cycle ...... time for a little modification. On the bottom of the basket, there is a flap that controls the strength of the brew. On the flap there are six small reinforcing struts that the tea has to pass through to get into the pitcher. One of these struts is located directly under the overflow tube of the basket. I believe that when the basket fills and tea begins to go out the overflow tube, that small strut can divert part of the flow so that it misses the pitcher spout. I'm not sure if this is the case or not, but in an attempt to remedy the problem, I used a small pair of craft type side cutters to snip out this one strut. Now we have great tea every time and no more leaks.
Mr. Coffee has always produced fine products. I for one will not let this one experience deter me from making future purchases.
Poor quality ice tea maker - it leaks when brewing
When the tea maker percolates the water through, the tea leaks from where the spout connects to the base.
Inferior leaky model needs recall
Like other users have experienced, this model leaks a great deal from the machine base and makes a mess all over. To cope with it, I bought a utencil container. I place both the machine and pitcher in it to contain the mess. More tea is ending up in the container than the pitcher. A friend of mine who bought one on my recommendation (before it started leaking) has said she is experiencing the same thing.
I have used the older round pitcher model with the rust tops for years without incident. They had a much longer shelf life than this one.
If I were the company, I'd recall this model.
