From the Editors
The Gaggia MDF Grinder is a commercial grade burr grinder equal to those found in Europe's espresso bars and restaurants. Automatic dosing allows a premeasured amount of ground coffee to drop directly into the filter holder. Pull the lever once for one cup espresso, or twice for 2 cups. Precision-machined grinding burrs can be easily adjusted for 39 different degrees of fineness. The large hopper holds 10 ounces of coffee beans. Easy to use and perfect results are achieved each time.

Customer Response
Gaggia Grinder is fantastic
I really like this grinder so far. Although it is designed for espresso makers I just slip a Pyrex bowl under the support and grind a perfect batch of grounds for my daily coffee.
Great for home use
I puchased my MDF Burr Grinder along with the Gaggia Evolution espresso machine from Amazon many years ago. They were advertised as a pair, and I wanted good entry-level machines for home use.
In college, I worked in a coffee house -- "house" as in they roasted their own beans onsite. I was trained by an excellent barista and know what a good pull of espresso is supposed to look like, smell like, and taste like.
For home use, I am rather impressed with the MDF grinder. It provides a decent amount of settings (mine vary from 4 to 7) and delivers a consistent grind. Yes, it's noisy, but I'm unsure what people expect of a coffee grinder -- they're all noisy due to the fact they GRIND coffee beans. Even professional grinders make some amount of noise; you just don't notice it due to all of the ambient noise in a commercial venue.
This machine has served me well for quite a few years and, hopefully, will continue to do so for many more.
Great Grinder!
I've used my Gaggia MDF for about a year and have it paired up with a Gaggia Coffee espresso machine. Overall I've been very satisfied with the grinder. As you know, when it comes to espresso it's all about the grinder. The Gaggia MDF doesn't disappoint. Yes, it isn't "stepless", which is less than ideal but easy to work around. For example, if you're convinced that something between setting 2 and 3 is what you need, then just adjust you dosing a bit -- add or subtract a gram or two of coffee -- and you're good to go (what, not weighing your coffee? Give it a try! Hey, we're not busy baristas and we have the luxury of time...). Currently, my "sweet spot" with my fresh, home-roasted coffee beans is setting 2 with 15 grams of coffee grounds. Practice, practice, practice... and weigh your coffee.
Pros:
Solid feel, quality burrs
Great Espresso
Price/value
Aesthetics
Cons:
Needed to add rubber "feet" to keep the grinder stable
Doser is somewhat messy and inconsistent
Not super speedy at finer grinds
Doser arm is plastic, so don't play barista with it (bang, bang, bang...)
Excellent value in a solid grinder
I just got my MDF, so I can't yet comment on durability, although I hear these things are quit long-lived, and mine sure seems solidly built.
The grind is very uniform, and the MDF has many settings fine enough for espresso with a commercial style (non pressurized) portafilter. I am using settings of 6 or 7 with freshly roasted beans (dark, oily roast), and, with a light tamp, gettting 25 second 1-ounce extractions on my double shots. Seems about right to me.
Others have complained about the portafilter not fitting in the doser. I see how this could be an issue, but so long as you have a commercial style 58mm portafilter (or a removable basket on the portafilter handle that you can put under the doser), you should be fine.
I find that the doser doesn't retain much grinds, which is good, 'cuz the coffee that's left in there will get stale pretty fast.
Overall, I am very pleased and looking forward to many years of delicious espresso with my new grinder!
Best espresso grinder I have ever had (except for my commercial espresso cart grinder!)
I have owned several "espresso" grinders but none have had the accuracy needed for creating perfect espresso like this model from Gaggia does. Yes, it can grind coffee in larger grits (like for auto-drip) but if espresso is your thing then you will find it has the ability to grind it accurately, every time. The grinder has 30+ grind settings but between 5 and 10 is the espresso range. I have found that 7 or 8 works best. And it is so much quieter when grinding than any non-commercial grinder I have ever owned. Love it! About 12 seconds or so of grinding and you have enough ground espresso coffee to brew up a shot of espresso. I personally don't grind any more than I need right now since coffee loses it's flavor and scent within a few minutes of grinding.
Why only 4 stars instead of 5? Because the manufacturer did not put rubber pads on the bottom of the grinder, so it has a tendency to slide and move around when you pull the lever to dispense the grounds. So the solution is to place it on one of those non-slip rubber pads you use to help you open a jar.
And the only other reason I give it a 4 star instead of a 5 star rating is because when you pull the espresso filter holder out of the unit, any excess ground coffee is deposited on your countertop! Bad engineering design (that's a beef I have with engineers who obviously never use the products they design!) But the solution is simple enough, I place a small plate under the dispensing area of the grinder and it captures the excess grinds and then I just drop that back into the ground coffee dispenser.
At this price (I paid $295) it is well worth the investment!
