Rival Rice Cooker
I can't for the life of me cook rice properly. I watch other people do it and am amazed that they use the same ingredients, throw it in a pot with some water, and voila, 20 min. later have a perfect pot of soft wonderfully cooked rice. I can do the same thing and two hours later my rice is still crunchy. Its just not in the cards for me to be able to cook it. But then I got my Rival Rice Cooker. There are a lot of problems with this model, but ultimately, I am able to cook rice perfectly with it. Also, this model does come in a spiffy red color that actually looks quite nice for an appliance.

This model comes with a steamer basket, plastic spoon for stirring, and measuring cup that holds a certain amount of rice for measuring purposes. Of course it also comes with the pot and actual cooker and lid as well. The steamer basket is a nice addition and does work very well for steaming vegetables while your rice is cooking. The plastic spoon is somewhat worthless in my opinion but at least it doesn't scratch the surface. The measuring cup is nice but don't be fooled into thinking its an actual "cup" of rice as it is its own measurement. Measuring the water is just as easy by following the lines on the side of the bowl. I've used these measurements with several different types of rice (jasmine, basmati, brown, etc.) and have had good results every time.

I've only used one cup at a time for this rice cooker since there's only two of us and haven't had a problem with clean up. Some water and "skin" forms at the steam hole on the lid but this is easily cleaned by placing the lid in the dishwasher. I can't comment on how well this works with larger amounts of rice since I've never tried it. The bowl and other utensils (aside from the electric cooker itself) clean up nicely in the dishwasher as well.

Now for the bad part, I used this cooker maybe a total of eight times (twice or so a month) when in the middle of cooking it just completely zonked out on me. Nothing would persuade it to come back on. Why then did I rate it so high if this happened? I contacted the good folks at Rival/Jarden and they sent me a replacement absolutely free. To me this is excellent customer service and shows that they stand behind their products. I'm not sure how long my new one will last but at least now I feel as if I'm getting my money's worth out of the cooker. Not to mention I now have two sets of bowls, utensils, and all other accessories so I won't have to diligently clean everything if I want to use it two nights in a row.

This is a great little cooker if you don't get a faulty one. But even if you do it would seem like this is the company to get it from as they back their products. Overall I'd say I've had a good experience with this cooker and no longer have crunchy rice.

rice is nice with this device!
I love this little rice cooker! It makes brown rice, which I love, and does it SO much easier than I ever could on the stove. I did have to do a tiny bit of adjusting to get the formula just right for the rice I use. I use 3 measuring cups -- of the little measuring cup that came with the cooker -- of rice and 4 measuring cups of water. This fills the cooker perfectly to the "full" line on the inside of the cooker.

I noticed that several people have commented about being concerned they might lose the measuring cup. Maybe this information will help: The little plastic measuring cup holds exactly 3/4 cup. [I'd be curious if anyone knows what that particular measurement comes from. Is that a Japanese measure of some sort??] In any case, if you lose the measuring cup now, you can cope just fine using regular cooking measuring cups! [For example, my recipe of 3 rice cooker measures of rice to 4 rice cooker measures of water would -- using regular cooking measuring cups -- be 2 and 1/4 cup of rice and 3 cups of water.] Frankly, I more often use my regular measuring cups than the little plastic cup that came with the cooker.

I admit that my little rice cooker does sputter quite a bit. [I just put it outdoors on the patio on an old vinyl tablecloth that catches all the spray and let it sputter away to its heart's content!] However, I appreciate the comment that one of the reviewers made about sauteeing the rice first (I already rinse it well, and that doesn't seem to have helped too much. I thought it "boiled over" because I filled it to the "full" line every time.). Next time, I'll try the sauteeing and see if that works.

Great product
Pros:
Cooks fast
Cooks great
Easy wash
Easy to use

Cons:
Small

My wife will only use this one
In college, my wife picked up this little rice cooker because it was cheap and could make small portions for her. When we were dating, she would make me spanish rice and all sorts of things in there. I moved across the country for a job and thought I'd get a "nicer" big 10 cup rice cooker with lots of bells and whistles. When she came and moved in with me, she hated my rice cooker. It couldn't make spanish rice the way she wanted. It was too big and didn't have the same simple ease of use as this one. She made me go to Target and buy one of these. We still have the big fancy one, but it sits in the back of a cabinet. The rice cooker just broke (won't turn on), so we just ordered two more.

Why is this better than others:
- It is small, which is perfect for one person or a couple. Many larger rice cookers (like the big one we have) don't work for small portions.
- The bowl heats up quickly on the bottom so you can saute in it. This is important for many rice recipes like my wife's spanish rice.
- The steamer is easy to use and add or remove at any time. My big rice cooker also had a steamer, but it sat inside and got very hot. It was difficult to remove without burning yourself. This one sits on top with its own handle so you can just stick it in between the rice and the lid and later remove it whenever you want without burning yourself or disturbing the rice.
- Extremely simple to use. There's a switch. You put the rice in and press the button. No screens, programming, options, nothing, it just works.
- Easy to clean. Stick the bowl and lid in the dishwasher and you're done. Hand washing a rice cooker is a pain, especially if it doesn't have a removable bowl. This one is a piece of cake.

What might be a problem for you:
- It won't cook enough for more than two or three people. If you're feeding a family of four or more, you'll need a bigger rice cooker.
- There's no way to turn it off without unplugging it. We have accidentally left it plugged in a number of times and it remains in the keep warm mode forever.
- May not be the most durable and long lasting. We've only had our for two years, haven't mistreated it, and it stopped working.
- Steamer isn't the greatest. You don't get the best quality steaming from the built in steamer, but I've never found one on a rice cooker that's all that great. Steam on the stove if you really care.

All in all I would strongly recommend this unless it doesn't work for you for one of the following reasons:
- Too many people (it won't feed more than 3)
- You need a delay timer (some fancier ones allow you to put the rice in before you head to work and have the rice cooked and ready 8 hours later)
- You need some other fancy feature (in my opinion anything that doesn't work in something like this you should just do on the stove)
- You hate red (it doesn't come in any other color, maybe you could paint it?)

very satisfied
I recieved the cooker quickly in perfect condition. The price was good and I am very happy using it.
