From the Editors

A staple in Europe, the Spidem Villa is a super-automatic home espresso machine that retains the features made popular by its predecessors, the Vienna super-automatic machines. Spidem Villa by Saeco puts Saeco's patented removable brew group technology into an easy-to-use interface. You can now make espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and tea all using one machine that grinds, tamps, and brews gourmet coffee. The steam and hot water wand has an exclusive pannarello to make frothing milk simple. The Spidem Villa's adjustable conical burr grinder makes the perfect grind for gourmet coffee. The Opti-Dose adjustable doser feature enhances your flexibility to make an ideal cup of coffee. Not only can you adjust the fineness of the grinds and the amount of coffee brewed, but also the amount of ground coffee used to make each individual cup from 6 to 9 grams. With a light push, the machine will rotate on its swivel base, simplifying general maintenance and cleaning and the refilling of the 57-ounce water tank. This package contains two things traditionally never found at the same time: a top-quality espresso/cappuccino machine and a reasonable price. The unit features a simple control panel, with three buttons and a dial--one button for power, one for coffee, one for steam. The adjustable steam wand is on a swivel joint, allowing you to place either a 12-ounce or 20-ounce frothing pitcher underneath to easily make creamy cappuccinos and lattes. The machine also features a pre-infusion system for extra-rich flavor, extracting the most aroma from the grinds in a pre-brewing cycle. The internal dump box for used grounds is removable and can hold up to 15 pucks. Removable drip tray and dreg drawer for easy cleaning. Power: 1,250 watts/120 volts. Warranty: One year parts and labor. Made in Italy.

Customer Response

Piece of Crap
Broke within the first month. Wouldn't froth automatically. Called customer service; no help Now after two years, the unit is entirely broken. Do not waste your money on this machine!

Great Cup of Joe BUT...
Bought this machine 12/2008, it worked fine until it was 2 years old and now its been in for repairs 3 times in 5 months. It makes a great cup of coffee but I suggest buying one of Saeco's other models. When you spend $500 for an Espresso Machine you expect it to last longer than 2 years.

Great machine, great price.
We purchased the Saeco A-SPV-BK Spidem Villa Super-Automatic Espresso Machine right after Thanksgiving and have been using it to make 2-4 beverages daily for a month now. So far, no glitches and really delicious lattes, teas and hot chocolates every time. It takes up just a bit more counter space than our regular coffee maker, so no worries there. Easy to fill the water and bean holders, empty the espresso puck bin, and to understand the very detailed instructions for setting up, using and cleaning this machine. We have been following the cleaning instructions pretty closely and I'm sure that will help this machine to continue performing well in the long run.

The price is very reasonable at about $300. We have already saved at least the $80 we would have spent at a coffeehouse in the last month by using this machine instead. Plus it makes the kitchen smell so good!

Having been a barrista for 7 years, I really like that you can set the dosage for the amount of coffee in each espresso shot as well as the amount of water that is pulled through on a shot by shot basis. The fact that the machine is all-in-one makes each drink taste great and so easy to make once you get the hang of it.

FYI, if you want your latte to be good and hot with this machine: steam the milk first and leave it in the pitcher with a nice cap of foam on top, then pull the espresso shots directly into your mug with any syrups, sugars or other flavorings, finally pour the steamed milk into the mug and spoon the froth onto the top. Stir if needed. The milk will hold the heat a lot longer when sitting off to the side than the espresso shots.

Another thought: order a steaming pitcher online as well. They are getting harder to find for a decent price (no more than $10-12) at grocery and department stores. Starbucks has a nice ceramic pitcher for $10, but it's only big enough to make enough milk for one drink at a time.

P.S. You don't have to use espresso roasted beans to make a good espresso. A Columbian French roast or other dark-ish roast will do nicely, but you might want to adjust the dosage to strengthen the shot. Espresso roasted beans are very oily and will require you to clean your machine more often and more carefully.
Enjoy!

Junk
Makes a great cup of coffee, but is very cheaply made. Everything is low quality plastic and poorly fitting. After about two months the power button broke off and after a year the machine completely stopped working. Spend the extra money and get something better.

This is the only espresso machine you'll ever need!
I've bought a few high end do it yourself machines and they all broke down in one way or another. Tiring of constantly fiddling with them I went for the full-auto. Like other reviewers have said, despite the plastic exterior and parts, this machine does exactly what it promised to do - makes great espresso with no fuss. Just put in the beans, add the water, push the button and out comes delicious espresso. And it heats up quickly so you can make multiple cups if you have guests. I should have bought this from the start but wanted to have the feel of making it "from scratch". Now that I've done that, I can live without the tedium of making it, and get straight to drinking it.

The only "drawback" I can see with this machine is the plastic parts - its not a beautiful machine compared to the chrome wonders that are out there, I'm actually amazed it works as flawlessly as it does given all the plastic parts, but it works beautifully and that's what matters. If they made it with chrome and steel it would probably be $1,000 or more. Its a really remarkable machine, I love it and would say it beats out a lot of other high end machines that look great but break down and are a hassle to use.
