A bargain that works great
I bought this machine in February 2010 at Target. I had reservations about buying a low end machine from a maker known for it's price point products. Not to worry. It has exceeded my expectations in every way. Everything worked perfectly out of the box.

The unit warms up in just a couple of minutes and makes nice espresso, assuming you are using a quality coffee to begin with. It produced adequate crema and has low suspended solids, so the portafilter is doing it's job. In my opinion, the espresso I get from the Mr. Coffee ECMP50 is better than I typically get from the coffee chain stores and nearly as good as the best from a recent trip to Northern Italy. Maybe with more experience, I can equal the Italian espresso experience... I think the machine is up to it.

The steamer works well for milk steaming and frothing. There may be better on the market, but this one has no obvious shortcomings. Well, maybe one.. the rubber tip of the frothing wand is not easy to remove for cleaning.

There is a "shelf" on the top which gets warm after 20 minutes or so and is a handy place for the tamper and other items. I suppose it would warm cups, but I'm not patient enough to turn it on a half hour before I need it.

It is quiet enough, but being a light weight unit, it vibrates when the pump is running, so you need to hold the cup(s) still while it is brewing. I solved the problem with a piece of rubber shelf/drawer liner. Shelf liner works great on the top shelf too.

I've had no leaks or other problems. I would recommend it and would buy another as it seems to be a terrific bargain which does what it is designed to do with excellence. I'll change my rating to 5 stars if it holds up for a year or so.

Excellent coffee for a reasonable price.
I am not a coffee snob, but I enjoy my espresso. I have owned a DeLongi that did not meet my expectation, and then laid down roughly $300 for a "Coffee Gaggia", because Consumers' Report rated it highly. I purchased the Mr Coffee to replace a Mr Coffee steam driven machine that I had in my office. The steam brew was not as good as my Gaggia brew but it was much cheaper. When the steam brewer finally died due to aging plastic of the coffee cage handle, I looked around, and decided to try the pump Mr. Coffee. Very pleased! It makes a better cup than my Gaggia for 1/5th the price and does so with much less trouble. Turn it on and mount the coffee cage while it heats up - voila! The crema is much better than I get with the Gaggia. In addition, the Gaggia is unable to draw a double without waiting for the chamber to reheat. I have not tried to draw two cups, but a simple double is absolutely no problem for the Mr Coffee: a clean draw with good crema throughout and the smooth almost sweet taste that accompanies a quick brew. The coffee this makes is superior to any I have made except with a machine that a friend purchased for his lab at a cost of ~ $3000. That is not to say that there are not better machines, but in my experience, no better at anywhere near this price. I drink only espresso, so I have not tried the milk frothing spout. Also, I have used this machine for only about a month so I am not sure how well it will hold up, but at this price I can replace it 5 times for what I paid for my Gaggia! If my Gaggia ever dies, I'll have a Mr Coffee at home as well.

Piece of junk...twice!!!
Bought first one at Target. Set up machine and followed instruction exactly as stated-even priming the frother. The machine started smoking from top and a plastic smell started to permeate my whole kitchen. There was also a terrible knocking sound-not sure if this is normal with pump espresso makers. Between the loud, annoying noise, smoke, and smell, I decided I bought a "lemon." I returned it to Target and bought another one. After following instructions again, I brewed my first cup of espresso (very noisy machine) which came out fine. I then proceeded to froth my milk-well, guess what, frother didn't work! Same annoying knocking noise started coming out of machine as well. My husband and I fiddled with it and re-read instructions 10 times. Frother was just sputtering along and then finally died. I am in the process of packing this up and returning it as well. I won't try for a third "strike." I'm done with this espresso maker-total piece of junk!

Good, but needs a larger filter basket
I bought this machine based on it's reported ability to make good espresso. It does produce lots of nice looking crema, but being cappuccino drinkers, I'm not sure this makes much difference. I had a smaller Krups steam machine before, which didn't make as much crema, but the resultant cappuccino was just as good as what I get from this Mr. C.

My only complaint is that the 2 cup filter basket is too small, much smaller than what we had on our Krups model. To get our two large cappa's each morning I have to empty and refill. Were it not for this hassle, I would have given 5 stars. Otherwise all other aspects of this modern marvel are working well after 3 weeks of being in service.

Good machine, great espresso
I really like my Mr. Coffee ECMP50. It exerts the required pressure to form the crema, a rich foam.

The steamer does a great job of foaming the milk for a really good cappuccino. I wish that the process was a little faster, but I do enjoy brewing this treat. Add a little bit of chocolate syrup to the milk before foaming, and you get a really good mocha cappucino.

A really good bargain, it compares favorably to machines costing three times the price. Enjoy!
