Piece of junk...twice!!!
Bought first one at Target. Set up machine and followed instruction exactly as stated-even priming the frother. The machine started smoking from top and a plastic smell started to permeate my whole kitchen. There was also a terrible knocking sound-not sure if this is normal with pump espresso makers. Between the loud, annoying noise, smoke, and smell, I decided I bought a "lemon." I returned it to Target and bought another one. After following instructions again, I brewed my first cup of espresso (very noisy machine) which came out fine. I then proceeded to froth my milk-well, guess what, frother didn't work! Same annoying knocking noise started coming out of machine as well. My husband and I fiddled with it and re-read instructions 10 times. Frother was just sputtering along and then finally died. I am in the process of packing this up and returning it as well. I won't try for a third "strike." I'm done with this espresso maker-total piece of junk!
Good, but needs a larger filter basket
I bought this machine based on it's reported ability to make good espresso. It does produce lots of nice looking crema, but being cappuccino drinkers, I'm not sure this makes much difference. I had a smaller Krups steam machine before, which didn't make as much crema, but the resultant cappuccino was just as good as what I get from this Mr. C.
My only complaint is that the 2 cup filter basket is too small, much smaller than what we had on our Krups model. To get our two large cappa's each morning I have to empty and refill. Were it not for this hassle, I would have given 5 stars. Otherwise all other aspects of this modern marvel are working well after 3 weeks of being in service.
Good machine, great espresso
I really like my Mr. Coffee ECMP50. It exerts the required pressure to form the crema, a rich foam.
The steamer does a great job of foaming the milk for a really good cappuccino. I wish that the process was a little faster, but I do enjoy brewing this treat. Add a little bit of chocolate syrup to the milk before foaming, and you get a really good mocha cappucino.
A really good bargain, it compares favorably to machines costing three times the price. Enjoy!
Great machine for the Price
In the cosmic sense, this isn't the best espresso machine that money can buy - hence the four-star rating. But, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, this is more like a seven-star machine. I haven't had an problems with it so far, and it's gets used 7-10 times/week.
For what it's worth, the scoop/tamper it comes with is cheap and lightweight. I wanted a more sturdy one, so I had to buy it separately (I've heard that this is common with less expensive machines). If you want to do the same, you want a 51mm tamper for this machine.
All in all, I'm very happy with this machine.
A coffee lover's must!
I just got this machine today and was enjoying my first latte within an hour! I have never made one before, but read up on it (including some of these reviews) and had no problem pulling off my very first try! Not to mention, with the money we saved by not buying a pricier model (we were also considering the Cuisinart) we decided to buy a burr mill. I know things will only get better from here! I do recommend two things: as other reviewers have said, read the directions! That way when all the lights start blinking or its not working the way it should, you'll know why! (like I did the first time I used it!) and take some time to read other reviews. They will give you good tips on how to make a good espresso, especially if you've never done it before! I also recommend buying from Amazon. I have read other reviews where they purchased the item from a local store so they would have the option of returning it, but Amazon is very good about returns. Besides, the prices are always lower, add on the super saver shipping, and in my case, there was no tax. So it saved me about [...] and I had my machine in less than 7 days! Before you know it, you'll be enjoying your Sunday morning latte, or mocha, or whatever you want at home and not at some overcrowded, overpriced cafe.
Update- It's been a week and I'm in Latte heaven. Realizing how easy it is just peeves me more when I think of how much money I could have been saving all this time! Just one note. As an previous reviewer said, the steam quality does decrease over time, but if you gently pull off the steam wand tip, and clean all the gunk, it will be as good as new. In fact I think I will just do that on a daily basis to avoid having wrestle with it after a week. That ealier reviewer mentioned leaving the tip off all together, but I'm not ready to do that. We'll see how it goes this way. I don't forsee any problems.
By the way, a great big THANK YOU to all you reviewers out there! You made all the difference with the way I shop online! Especially with this! I never make a purchase if the item does not have good reviews!
Update- DO NOT TRY TO STEAM WITH WITHOUT RUBBER TIP! It doesn't work! Just make sure to take off and clean often. Also, ivest in a good tamper. I just got the RSVP (for only [...]) and it makes tamping much easier! Just be sure to pay attention to size. This Mr. Coffee takes a 2" tamper! (or 49mm)This RSVP is perfect!
