Revolutionizing a classic favorite. The new Spacemaker coffee maker was designed to please the traditional Spacemaker user: sturdiness, performance but most of all, 63% more usable counter space. Intuitive, easy to use features. At least 2 of the mounting holes are kept the same as the original (ODC) to facilitate upgrades.

Great coffeemaker for small kitchens!
I had the old 'white box' B&D coffeemaker (x2), and the clock became unreadable and thus the timer unusable on both. Both lasted a long time and were easy to install otherwise. I liked the old rail-type slide-in mounting system better than the new direct bolt system, since cleaning behind or changing out the appliance took only seconds.
I installed the B&D UC Toaster Oven first, and so discovered a lot of instructions were missing from the coffeemaker. They are totally unclear on where to line up the template at the front, implying it is at the TOP front edge of the shelf and it wraps around, which it isn't supposed to do. If there is a lip on the cabinet, you are supposed to fold the template on the rearmost dotted line and snug it up behind the lip, but those directions are missing entirely, as is a Centerline Mark. All the screw holes lined up fine. Only the rear bolts required spacers. I did not use the thick black plastic beveled washers, letting the screwheads sink into the wood, so the cabinet shelf would remain smooth for sliding in glasses. I covered the screws with vinyl shelf paper. The right side bolts where either too long or too short for my 3/4" lip (screws come in 3 lengths), so I cut 'em off with a Dremel. The left side had a little channel the longer bolts could fit into. There is a little tiny catch on the front right corner of the lid, so pushing on it there and sliding the lid back releases it easily(some reviewers had a hard time with it).
The wierd oblong insulated carafe holds (3) 16 oz cups of coffee (about the same as the old one), doesn't dribble, and keeps the coffee hot for 4 hours with a full pot, and warm all day.
A blue LED lights up the steamy water bin fill gauge, 24/7, like a night light, but the barely-visible black-on-dark gray clock is NOT lighted; Kinda wierd thinking. The clock and timer are easy to set. It comes with a permanent coffee filter, but you can use standard paper filters, too.
As another reviewer noted, the water bin needs some type of inside bump or marker so you know where the Maximum Fill line is while looking down from the top, otherwise it might get over-filled, but that is my only complaint so far. (Purchased from B&D 12/09)
This is the best appliance I bought this year
because I needed a coffee pot that could fit under the low cabinets in my little kitchen and it works perfectly.
My partner installed the coffee maker in less than two hours. We did have to run to a hardware store for a specific bit for the drill, and she did have to fiddle with the spacers because my cabinets are not standard issue. The template was fine, and there weren't any major glitches at all.
The steaming hot coffee was ready when we woke up.
FIXING THE COFFEE LEAKAGE FROM SDC850 CARAFE.
I was worried about the coffee leakage problem like others SDC850 buyers but after some observation, I found the source and the solution for the carafe leakage problem! Before going ahead, I must warn you about the coffee that leaks from the carafe. It's old coffee (from weeks) that leak to inside of the plastic cover. Make sure about not drinking this horrible thing with your fresh coffee. The problem has his origin in a cheap (the cheapest possible) vedation system between the plastic top cover and the stainless steel pot. Here is the solution. Try this only if you have sufficient skill to do the following steps: 1-Carefully, remove the handle cover with a small screwdriver, It's locked in place with small plastic locks around. 2- Remove the phillips screw that secure the handle to carafe (lower part of handle). 3- With TWO medium sized flat screwdrivers, unmount the top pastic cover from the stainless steel pot. This step generates a lot of work but you must have patience. Once again, there's plastic lockers around. Also, there's a small plastic rod with a little spring at end. Observe tha correct position of these items when mounting the things back. 4- Now you can see a cheap (silicone?) ring that do(?) the vedation. Remove it and have some fresh silicone sealant (smells like vinegar). Dont forget to clean the top of stainless steel pot. 5- Fill ALL THE GROOVE with silicone sealnt, making sure that it's completely filled. Use your finger to make the finish most plain possible. 6- Wait 24 hours until the silicone looks solid. 7- Replace the top plastic cover on it's original position relative to carafe. Use the screw hole to obtain the correct alignment with the stainless steel pot. DO NOT PRESS THE PLASTIC COVER IN PLACE YET. 8- Put the top cover / stainless steel pot set on a plain and firm surface. Now, press FIRMLY (harder you can) the plastic top cover in place WITH BOTH YOUR HANDS, making sure that all plastic lockers are in place. 9- Replace the philips screw, the pastic rod with the spring and the handle plastic cover. !!!!BINGO!!!! No more leakages mom!!!!. Now you have what you paid for. That's it. Good luck!!!
UGH NOT AGAIN!!!
I love the concept of this under the counter coffee maker and Black and Decker seems to be the only one who makes them, at least in a reasonable price range. Things started out good and I thought this one was going to make it but nope, few months in and the thing will not take the water. It steams up the cabinets and I have to continually hit the restart button to try to at least get my morning cup of coffee. This is the third unit I have bought and all three have done the exact same thing. They just quit taking water. I would blame the water if I thought it would help but we do have very clean water. I hate the thought of going back to the dang counter models. Pull the unit out, fill the pot, dump it in the back and all over the counter, slide it back under the counter and splash water all over the counter again.....just can't wait!!!
Great Idea, lousy implementation
This looked like a great concept (why I bought it), the engineers failed horribly on this one.
1. First carafe leaked, right out of the box. Black and Decker was great about agreeing to replace it the only problem was there was so many to replace it was backlogged for 2 months. A little duct tape did the job until the new one arrived.
2. The 'Thermal' carafe has the insulative property of cheese cloth. The coffee comes out hot and is cool within 45 minutes. I now poor the new coffee into a thermos.
3. When making the coffee, you have to fill the removable water tank, in order to replace the water tank if you don't have the steady gyros of a robot, the water sloshes a little and then there is drippage on the counter.
That's probably enough bashing for today. Point is, looks like a real cool concept, just needs some serious re-engineering.
