From the Editors

Revolutionizing a classic favorite. The new Spacemaker coffee maker was designed to please the traditional Spacemaker user: sturdiness, performance but most of all, 63-percent more usable counter space. Intuitive, easy to use features and classic design, perfect for the Spacemaker traditional consumer. At least 2 of the mounting holes are kept the same as the original (ODC) to facilitate upgrades.

No problems so far....dont know why so many bad reviews?
Ordered this with the can opener and toaster, so my installation experience got better as I went along. Was able to install this in about 5 minutes.

Haven't lost time on the clock as others have reported. It brews quick and the coffee in the pot is hot enough temperature wise. I have no leaks or problems with the "sneak a cup" lever leaking, but I do see how if you don't set the pot in correctly you can have one heck of a mess from the overflow during brewing.

The water reservoir is a bit interesting compared to what you would normally find on a counter top coffee maker you are probably familiar with. But being that its under counter and you can't use a vertical column to store the water like a counter top model, this "drawer" is the compromise. It's basically a drawer shaped plastic box with a clear removable top with a big hole in it. The clear top comes off if you want to take it apart and wash it. If you remove the entire drawer to fill it with water, when putting it back in you have to be careful because the water can slosh around and weep out the top. I've seen complaints about this and even people caulking it! Take an extra 10 seconds to slowly move it and reinsert it!

For me, its installed right next to my sink so I simply pull out the drawer half way, exposing the hole on the top. I then use the hose wand attachment to fill the reservoir to the level I need. Let it settle for a 5 seconds or so to check accuracy and then push back in. I do see that it needs to be level and the water still in order to properly determine how much water is really in there, but its the compromise needed to have an under counter maker. If you find it unbearable to spend 15-30 seconds extra during the brewing process, then do NOT purchase this coffee maker.

Brews fine and I've run about 20 pots through it so far. I really don't have any problems with it.

nice clean look and works great
I replaced my older spacemaker coffeemaker with the new one and really like the new clean look. It works great and also like the new water holding space. Highly recommend this product to others.

Has this happened to yours?
We received this model as a gift over a year ago. From day one it leaked water from the resevoir, even with only 10 cups. It leaks plenty when filled to twelve. It also perked one pot onto the counter caused by a slightly out of place pot.

Always wiping up during and after the perk would keep me from buying another; however, this morning, right after perking a pot, it died! No lights, no clock, no evidence of power from a still-hot electric outlet. Has anyone else had this happen? It doesn't appear that this model has been recalled.... but on the positive side, it did make good coffee and it won't mess up my countertop again!

NEVER turn your back on this coffee maker

This is the worst coffee maker I have ever used. It is annoying and dangerous.

We dare not use this coffee maker without standing right there watching it through the whole brewing process, towel in hand.

1. The "sneak a cup" feature is mis-designed and dangerous. The lever that the coffee pot pushes against to hold the water escape aperture on the filter basket open will (with nearly 100% predictability) actually push the coffee pot 1/4" out towards the front of the unit, causing the aperture on the filter basket to be closed. The filter basket will then overflow, dumping the coffee all over the counter (and everyone on the counter) instead of into the pot.

I ripped the whole silly "sneak a cup" mechanism off of the unit. Originally I planned to try replacing the spring with a weaker one, but decided that it's just too dangerous to leave in place.

If you buy this coffee maker, I HIGHLY recommend that you remove the "sneak a cup" lever and spring before you install the unit, or you will be likely to get a very bad surprise.

2. Even with the "sneak a cup" mechanism removed, the filter basket still overflows unpredictably and dumps boiling coffee all over the counter. We have not been able to figure this one out -- we think that perhaps the water flow is very poorly regulated, and it sometimes dumps water in the filter basket faster than it can filter the coffee into the pot.

For my next step in re-engineering this monstrosity of a consumer product, I plan to use a (Makita, not a Black & Decker) drill to enlarge the hole in the bottom of the filter basket, hopefully increasing the speed at which the filter basket empties and thereby preventing overflow.

Of course, then we will also have to experiment for as long as it takes to learn the new quantity of ground coffee to use with the modified filter basket.

3. The installation process is a terrible experience. I'm very handy, and this is not the first under-cabinet coffee maker I have installed. The poor instructions, useless mounting template, and inadequate hardware made a frustrating 4 hour job out of what should have been a straightforward 45 minute job.

4. Overall, the unit is very poorly constructed, mostly of cheap easily-bendable polyethylene.

I cannot recommend too strongly against this coffee maker. Buy almost any other available alternative. The quality of Black and Decker products seems to have gone completely down the drain in recent years.

Spacemaker Coffeemaker
We purchased this product as a replacement for a twenty year old Spacemaker. At first we were put off by the bulky appearance, but once installed it looks very attractive. It works very well and makes excellent coffee. The water tray is a bit bulky, but not a major problem. My only complaint is that the water tray sweats and water drips below and also the lip of the carafe causes drips too. Overall a good product as long as you don't put anything under it that could be damaged by water.
